PhD Supervision Opportunities in the Department of Management

The following is an updated list of the possibilities for PhD supervision in the department. Paul Ballantine

Interested in supervising projects in retailing, consumption behaviour (particularly the negative aspects of consumption), and social and ethical issues in marketing. Applicants should have a background in marketing or psychology, and be familiar with journals such as Journal of Retailing, Journal of Consumer Research, and Journal of Marketing Research.

Peter Cammock

Interested in supervising applied projects in the field of Leadership Studies and Organisational Change. Applicants should be familiar with quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies in the social sciences and with articles in academic journals such as Journal of Management Studies and Journal of Applied Behaviour Science.

Pavel Castka

Interested in supervising researchers in the general areas of quality management and corporate social responsibility (CSR) particularly those interested in process-based management systems, meta-standards in operations management and operalization of the CSR agenda. Preference is given to applicants familiar with qualitative methods in the social sciences. Applicants should be familiar with journals such as Journal of Management, Journal of Quality Management, the TQM Magazine, Total Quality Management and Business Excellence and International Journal of Operations and Production Management.

Leo Dana

Interested in supervising researchers in culture and enterprise, with a focus on indigenous people, including the Maoris and other island people. Applicants should have a well-balanced background including experience in anthropology, economics, ethnography and sociology.

Herb de Vries

Interested in supervising projects in the field of small business management and entrepreneurship, with a particular interest in entrepreneurship among immigrant and minority groups. Applicants should have a suitable background and should be familiar with, or interested in, qualitative methodologies.

Shane Dye

Interested in supervising researchers in Operations Research, particularly the areas of mathematical modelling, decision-making under uncertainty, algorithm development and combinatorial optimisation. Applications in telecommunications and energy are of particular interest. Suitable applicants should have degrees in Mathematics, Operations Research or Management Science. Familiarity with journals such as Annals of Operations Research and Mathematical Programming would be an advantage.

Joerg Finsterwalder

Interested in supervising researchers in the fields of Services and Relationship Marketing, in particular Customer Lifecycle Management, designing Customer Contact Strategies, Group Service Experiences, Improvisation in (Services) Marketing (Education). Applicants should have a degree in Marketing and should be familiar with articles on this subject in journals such as Journal of Service Research, Journal of Services Marketing, Managing Service Quality, Journal of Service Management, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Relationship Marketing, etc.

David Fortin

Interested in supervising researchers with appropriate computer competencies in the area of experimental electronic commerce (e.g. Web Advertising, Web-based pricing experiments, etc.) Applicants should have degrees in Marketing or Psychology, with a good background in experimental design, and should be familiar with articles on this subject in journals such as Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Consumer Research.

Tony Garry

Interested in supervising researchers in the area of relationship marketing and more specifically, in the field of consumption communities and consumption tribes within both offline and online contexts. I am also interested in supervising research which explores business-to-business professional service marketing relationships and particularly the roles of attraction and emotion within such contexts. Ideally, applicants should have a degree in the area of marketing and/or psychology and familiarity with journals such as the Journal of Marketing Management, European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing and Psychology and Marketing.

John Giffin

Interested in supervising researchers in heuristic design and analysis, facility layout design, facility location, vehicle routing and scheduling, arc-routing and Supply Chain Management. Applicants should have solid backgrounds and good degrees in any of Management Science, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering or Mathematics, and be interested in problem solving, preferably with both a theoretical and practical emphasis. Strong computing skills and familiarity with journals such as The European Journal of Operational Research, computers and Operations Research, Journal of Heuristics, and The International Journal of Production Research, would be advantageous.

Terri Green

Interested in supervising researchers in the field of Health Services Management. Applicants should be familiar with empirical methodologies in the social sciences, have some knowledge of and commitment to health services, and be familiar with articles in academic journals such as Health Economics, Social Science and Medicine.

C. Michael Hall

Interested in supervising enthusiastic and intellectually curious researchers within the fields of tourism and services marketing; place branding and promotion; tourism and human mobility; international business; regional development and policy; sustainability, business and the environment; and food, wine and gastronomy. Depending on the research problem and methodological and philosophical interests candidates may explore a variety of approaches and subjects. Candidates will be expected to perform at a high level of international scholarship as evidenced though seminars, publications and the thesis itself. Applicants should have good degrees with a solid understanding of relevant literature in journals and research monographs and research method in the social sciences, i.e. international business, management, marketing, tourism, hospitality, recreation and leisure studies, public policy, geography and/or environmental studies.

Interested in supervising researchers in the fields of small business development, corporate performance and aspects of industrial economics. Applicants should have degrees in Management or Economics and be familiar with empirical methodologies in the social sciences, as well as relevant articles in academic journals such as: Journal of Business Venturing, Strategic Management Journal and Journal of Industrial Economics.

Ross James

Interested in supervising researchers in heuristic search methods and scheduling applications. Applicants should have good degrees in Mathematics or Operational Research and be familiar with journals such as European Journal Operations Research, Operational Research, Management Science.

Paul Knott

Interested in supervising research into the nature, extent and impact of the use of tools, concepts and ideas in strategy activity. Publication outlets for this work exist in strategy and other management journals. The topic falls within the general research theme of the practice of strategy, which is concerned with strategising activity by managers. Applicants must be familiar with the application of strategy tools, be ready to undertake qualitative fieldwork, and be willing to draw upon cognitive theory in addition to mainstream strategy literature.

Interested in supervising researchers in the field of meaningful work, workplace spirituality, critical corporate social responsibility, purpose beyond profit, the relationship between existentialism and organisational behavior and various forms of workplace activism. I'm also interested in how we engage the hearts and souls of people in issues of social and environmental responsibility. Interested in supervising students in empirical research in the fields of organisational behaviour, organisational psychology and human resource management, specifically in the areas of ageing and the changing workforce, discrimination in employment, and attitudes and attitude measurement. Don McNickle

Interested in supervising researchers in queueing theory and computer simulation, especially statistical aspects of simulation. Applicants should have good degrees in Mathematics or Operations Research.

Colleen Mills

Interested in supervising researchers in the following areas: organisational behaviour, communication management, organisational change, sensemaking in the workplace, and internationalisation (particularly in service industries). Applicants should have backgrounds that include social psychology and industrial psychology and familiarity with a range of qualitative research methods.

Sussie Morrish

Sussie is interested in supervising postgraduate research projects in the area of marketing strategy, entrepreneurship and the interface between the two disciplines such as entrepreneurial marketing. Applicants should have a good background in marketing, entrepreneurship and related fields and be familiar with leading journals such as Journal of Marketing, Journal of Strategic Marketing, Journal of Research in Marketing and Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and Journal of Business Venturing.

Interested in supervising research on the energy sector utilising OR and/or Economic analysis. Particular interests in the design of electricity and gas markets, reservoir management and firm level optimisation in a market environment, but also in duality in DP and/or decision analysis. Applicants should have a strong mathematical background, with training in OR and/or Economics and, depending on the topic, be familiar with IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, The Energy Journal, Energy Economics, Water Resources Research and the major OR journals. Applicants should be familiar with social science research methodologies and should have up-to-date knowledge of research findings published in journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal , Organization Studies, and Organization Science. A firm background in the social sciences relevant to the study of organisations and organisational behaviour is highly desirable.

David Stiles

Interested in supervising students in the area of strategy formulation and implementation in the public or private sectors. Topics of particular interest include the application of strategy in the cultural settings of emerging and transition countries; higher education policy and strategy; joint ventures in China; the interrelationships between strategy, organisational image and identity; and strategy-as-practice in organisations. Applicants should have a first degree in management, strategy, marketing, international business, social psychology, politics, linguistics or semiotics.

Ekant Veer

Ekant is interested in supervising students willing to pursue a PhD in the area of Social Marketing, Transformative Consumer Research, Consumer Psychology or Advertising. A strong knowledge of research methods and an ability to develop theory are essential. Students should be familiar with relevant theories in both consumer research and psychology. Students wishing to undertake experimental research or ethnographic research will be given preference.

Sarah Wright

Interested in supervising projects in the fields of organisational behaviour and industrial/organisational psychology, with a particular focus on emotions in the workplace, emotional climates in organisations, interpersonal relationships at work, and employee performance. Applicants should have a background in psychology and/or human resource management, and be familiar with journals such as the Journal of Applied Psychology, the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, the European Journal of Work and Organisational Psychology, and the Journal of Organizational Behavior.
