Communication at Work

 

Call for papers

  • Abstracts for all proposals due by 15 November 2004.
  • Full papers for the refereed division due 15 February 2005 (if abstract is accepted).

We are now calling for abstracts for papers, panels, and workshops for the 2005 conference, Communication at Work. Read on for information about how to format and submit proposals.

 

If you are a post-graduate student we encourage you to consider submitting a paper to the refereed division. Refereed post-graduate papers are eligible for consideration for the Grant Noble Award.

 

Conference Streams

 

At this stage we envisage running the following streams:

  • Communication in the Workplace (Includes organisational, management and business communication),
  • Journalism and Mass Communication (Includes radio and television studies),
  • Media in Society and New Media,
  • Gender and Communication,
  • Peace and Political Communication,
  • Culture and Communication (Includes intercultural and international communication),
  • Public Relations and Community Communication,
  • Instructional Communication and Communication Education,
  • Communication Technologies,
  • Interpersonal and Small Group Communication.

Papers

 

• There will be both refereed and non-refereed paper divisions.
• The first step to presenting a paper involves submitting an abstract of the proposed paper.
• Authors should indicate their choice of division and conference stream when submitting their abstract.
• Abstracts for both refereed and non-refereed divisions must be submitted to ABST949@mang.canterbury.ac.nz for review by 15 November 2004.
• Abstract acceptance will be notified by January 15 2005.
• Refereed division papers only will then be subject to double-blind refereeing of the full-text version of the paper.
• The full-text versions of papers accepted for refereeing need to be submitted to PAPE838@mang.canterbury.ac.nz by February 15 2005.
• The WORD LIMIT for refereed papers (excluding the abstract, figures and tables, and reference list) is 5000 words.
• All files should be submitted as Word documents. Other file formats will be NOT be accepted.
• Accepted full-text refereed papers will be published after the conference in the conference’s online publication.
• For any paper (refereed or non-refereed) to be listed in the conference programme a paper at least one of the contributing authors must register and attend the 2005 conference.
• See FORMATS AND SUBMISSION for details on how to format abstracts and papers.


• All paper presentations will be assigned 20 minutes plus 10 minutes discussion time.
• Only work that is original and has not been previously presented will be accepted for presentation.

 

Panels

 

• Panels are an opportunity to develop a single theme or explore an issue from a variety of perspectives.
• Abstracts for panel proposals must be submitted to ABST949@mang.canterbury.ac.nz for review by 15 November 2004.
• Abstracts for panel discussions should include (1) a description of the issue or theme of the panel, (2) the name and particular perspective of each participant, (3) an explanation of the significance of the panel to the conference theme and communication scholarship, and (4) the intended audience and how audience members will benefit from the panel.
• Panels should include no more than three panelists, a chairperson, and a respondent (optional).
• Panel sessions will be 90 minutes long.


Workshops

 

• Workshops are an opportunity for discussion and activity around a single issue or skill set.
• The level of attendee participation distinguishes a workshop from other conference activities. Attendees should be actively involved during the session.
• Abstracts for workshops must be submitted to ABST949@mang.canterbury.ac.nz for review by 15 November 2004.
• Abstracts should include (1) a definition of the issue or activity being addressed, (2) the nature of attendees’ participation, (3) the relevance to the conference theme, and (4) the expected outcomes for attendees.

 

Formats and Submission

Abstracts


• Abstracts for papers, panels and workshops are to be submitted as Word file attachments to ABST949@mang.canterbury.ac.nz by 15 November 2004.
• The font should be single-spaced Times New Roman size 12.
• Please include the following in the order listed below:


o Sender’s email address
o Names of authors
o Authors’ affiliations - Department and institution/organisation.
o Student/non-student status.
o Type of proposal - Paper (include refereed or non-refereed division), panel, or workshop.
o Preferred stream -See Conference Streams (above).
o Title
o Abstract – Maximum of 300 words including title.
o Keywords – Maximum of four.

Papers


• If your abstract for a refereed paper has been accepted then send the full text version of your paper to PAPE838@mang.canterbury.ac.nz as a Word file attachment.
• The font should be single-spaced Times New Roman size 12.
• Below are details of the required paper format. Note that this format should be used for non-refereed papers that presenters intend to distribute at the conference.
